The Carolina Hurricanes is one of the best teams in the NHL this season + is a top contender for the Stanley Cup. In honor of the Raleigh team’s standings, we’re taking a look at their history.

Where it all began

The Canes joined the NHL in 1979 as the New England Whalers before relocating to Raleigh in 1997. In it’s new city, the team hit the ice strong, winning the Southeast Division in the 1998-1999 season and making an appearance in the playoffs for the first time since 1992.

Winning the cup

The Canes continued to see success in their early years, winning the 2001-2002 season division title, making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and ultimately establishing hockey in the Research Triangle. But no success was greater than their 2005-2006 Stanley Cup victory against the Edmonton Oilers. The Canes took home the league trophy in Game seven of the series in front of a home crowd of 18,978. This marked the best season in its franchise history.

Post-championship to now

For multiple seasons, many Hurricanes players were injured, making it challenging for the team to follow the 2005-2006 season’s success. From 2010-2018, the Canes saw many middle-of-the-pack season finishes. After a 10 year absence from the Stanley Cup playoffs, they qualified again during the 2018-2019 season.

That season, they even earned a reputation for their on-ice celebrations, leading Canadian hockey commentator Don Cherry to call the team “a bunch of jerks.” Instead of rebutting the claim, the team adopted the label, using it as a battle cry in future games.

In 2021 the Canes finished first in their division despite COVID-19 setbacks. This season, the Canes have a good chance at winning + The News & Observer says there are just 10 things they need to secure the Cup. What are your predictions, Raleigh? Let us know.

Announced

A museum focusing on NC Black builders + the history of Dix Park is popping up at Dix Park’s All Faiths Chapel from Sat., Jan. 15 to Sun., Feb. 27. The two exhibits, “We Built This: Profiles of Black Architects & Builders in NC” + “From Plantation to Park: The Story of Dix Hill,” will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Development

In a $6.6 million deal, local developer Stephens Enterprises LLC purchased properties in the Glenwood South district including My Way Tavern, Glenwood South Tailors + Total Row Fitness. The developer was motivated to buy because the properties are “in the path of ongoing redevelopment.” 🏢 (Triangle Business Journal)

Civic

The City of Raleigh’s Building Up-fit Grant application is open now through Sun., Jan. 30. The funds will assist businesses with improvements, renovations, and additions to the interior of their commercial properties. To see if your business qualifies, check out the City’s Q+A page. 💰

State

On Friday, Gov. Roy Cooper signed an executive order to create a Clean Transportation Plan that launches NC’s transition to electric vehicles. The order also set new targets of reaching a 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 + net zero by 2050. Read the full order here. 🔌 (The News & Observer)

Triangle Business Journal is recognizing the accomplishments of dynamic and outstanding businesswomen in the Triangle with their 24th annual Women In Business Awards. Did anyone come to mind? Nominations for each of the award’s various categories are open now through Mon., Jan. 17. 🏆
Dave and Busters will reopen at a new location — 1111 Walnut St., Cary, close to the soon-to-be Epic Games global headquarters — on Mon., Jan 17. Epic Games bought out the previous location inside Cary Towne Center. 🎮

Coming Soon

Burlington Stores will open a new Durham location at 1515 North Pointe Dr. on Fri., Feb. 25. The new location will be the Triangle’s fifth Burlington site after another Durham site opened last March. The NC Museum of Art’s “Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouvea Visionary” exhibition + immersive video projection of Mucha’s famous Slav Epic is open to the public now until Sun., Jan. 23. Find tickets to the exhibition here. 🖼️
