Development

  • Chapel Hill-based developer East West Partners paid $13 million last week to turn a former Kroger in Midtown into the Midtown BioCenter. The 350 E. Six Forks Rd. location will turn into 100,000 sqft of lab + life science space. (Triangle Business Journal via Jed Byrne’s Top Five)

Tech

  • Wake County has debuted a mobile app to address food insecurity. The county has teamed up with Tangelo — a national food benefits platform to create, distribute, and evaluate food benefits for members of the community. With the app, qualified residents can have food delivered to their door twice a month. 🥖

 

Biz

  • Tiamat Sciences, a Research Triangle Park startup, has raised $3 million in seed financing for an initiative led by Silicon Valley venture capital firm True Ventures. The developer of animal-free proteins plans to use the money to hire more employees + build a pilot production facility. (Triangle Business Journal)

Seasonal

  • Downtown’s Poyner YMCA has raised its Holiday Gift Drive Tree. Raleighites can support a child in the Triangle by grabbing a tag from the tree to find out what donation items are needed. New + unwrapped gifts can be delivered to the YMCA by Fri., Dec. 10. 🎄
  • Pullen Park is now offering its annual, limited-edition holiday ornament. This year’s classic ornament is $15 + only 400 are available. Ornaments can be picked up at the Pullen Park Welcome Center from 1-8 p.m. 

State

  • Gov. Roy Cooper announced yesterday that Dr. Mandy Cohen will be stepping down from her position as secretary of the NC Department of Health and Human Services. She will be succeeded by Kody Kinsley on Sat., Jan. 1. Kody is a Wilmington native + has served at the NCDHHS for four years.
  • As Pilot Mountain caught ablaze, NC issued a state-wide burn ban as of 5 p.m. Monday. Camp fires and open burning of plant materials are banned + all burning permits have been cancelled. The burn ban does not apply to fires within 100 feet of an occupied home. (The News & Observer)

  • Raleigh ranked No. 14 out of 400 cities and towns in WalletHub’s “2022’s Best College Towns and Cities in America.” The ranking was determined by “30 key indicators of academic, social and economic opportunities for students.” Also on the list was Austin at No.1 (howdy, ATXtoday) and Seattle at No. 24 (hey, SEAtoday). Edu

  • NC Reconnect, an initiative to recruit adult learners at five NC community colleges, will be expanding to five more schools in the spring. The additional schools include Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Wilkes Community College, and Central Carolina Community College. (EdNC)

  • NC Tripping has rounded up “17 Great Things to Do with Kids in Raleigh.” The list includes the NCMA for its outdoor movie series and walking trails and Marbles Kids Museum. Pullen Park and its 1911 carousel + the NC Museum of Natural Sciences are also mentioned. Find more activities here. 🧩
