Did you know Hispanic Heritage Month starts today? The month-long celebration (Thurs., Sept. 15-Sat., Oct. 15) is a national holiday dedicated to recognizing the contributions + achievements of Hispanic Americans.

Here are five Hispanic-owned businesses in the Triangle to consider supporting this month:

Epilogue Books

📍 109 E. Franklin St., Ste. 100, Chapel Hill
Books and churros go hand in hand at Epilogue Books, an independent bookstore that opened in 2019. Owners Miranda and Jaime Sanchez took their love of food, culture, and books and transformed it into a bookstore experience unlike any other found in the Triangle. Pro tip: Check out Epilogue’s staff picks if you need a recommendation for your next read — and don’t forget to check out its new sister shop, Prologue Used and Rare Books, right next door.

Alpaca Chicken

📍 11 locations throughout the Triangle
Ruby Bakhshi started Alpaca in 2006 — since then, the business has expanded across the Triangle. The family-owned business specializes in Peruvian “Pollo a la Brasa”-style rotisserie chicken, marinated and slow cooked over natural wood charcoal in a custom-made rotisserie oven. Yum.

Gonza Tacos Y Tequila

📍 Six locations in the Triangle
Gonza Salamanca and Carlos Rodriguez opened this award-winning taco + tequila joint in 2011. Diners will find colorful decor, hand-crafted cocktails, and authentic Colombian-Mexican cuisine at Gonza. Pro tip: While the weather is still nice, grab a table on the patio and dine outside at the North Raleigh location.

Yesterday, the team behind The Sunday Supper (an organization that helped families + businesses devastated by Hurricane Matthew) announced Now Serving, a NC nonprofit linking local restaurants with community-based organizations to provide healthy meals to hungry Raleighites.

Every week, local kitchens + restaurants (think: St. Roch, Mandolin, Hummingbird, PoshNosh Catering, HUBB Kitchens, and Ladyfingers) will collaborate to prepare two weekend meals for Now Serving. Then, local partners such as Meals on Wheels of Wake County + The Women’s Center will distribute the food to 320+ recipients in the Raleigh area.

To raise money for the cause, Now Serving is hosting its first charity dinner on Sun., Sept. 25 and we’re already getting hungry. Join chef + owner Sunny Gerhart at St. Roch alongside Ricky Moore of Salt Box Seafood Joint for a collaborative family-style dinner to support and celebrate Now Serving. Book your reservation ($75 a person) or donate to the cause.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by City Editor Cat.

Editor’s pick: Yesterday, I met up with City Editor Anne + Branded Content Creator Rachel at Ladyfingers for a light lunch (and some shopping). I munched on a sampler plate with broccoli salad, potato salad, and shrimp salad (there was a theme). Everything was fresh and delicious. I also walked away with a bag of Bean Martin from Larry’s Coffee from the retail shop.
